A Study of Relationship Between Directly Perceptual Social Support and defense Mechanism

Abstract
|
|
|
The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between directly perceptual social support and defense mechanism. The subjects were 178 senior students at a junior college in Andong and the period for data collection was from November 18 to November 21, 1991.
The instruments used were directly perceptual social support developed by Park Ji Won and defense mechanism developed by Kim Jin Kook and Oh 1k Soo. In order to determine the statistical significance of the results, the Pearson´s correlation was applied at the 0.05 level of significance.
The results were as follows;
1. Hypothesis: "The higher the defense mechanism of the nursing students, the lower directly perceptual social support of nursing students" The experimental results did support this hypothesis (r= -0.2224, P < 0.01).
2. The correlations between directly perceptual social support and denial, intellectualization were significant (r= 0.3635, P < 0.001; r= 0.2982, P < 0.001). The correlations between directly perceptual social support and repression, regression, projection, compensation, and displacement were significant (r= -0.1881, P < 0.01; r= -0.3242, P < 0.001; r= -0.3589, P < 0.001; r= -0.1565, P < 0.05; r= -0.3852, P < 0.001).
